why am i so stupid?
12.29.03 (7:02 pm) [edit]
I really thought that perhaps I could just run this new restaurant and not actually have to be there very often. 29 hours of work and two days later, I'm dead tired, and the store is still needing some work. Labor is over the limit it should be at on the day because of all the cleaning. The employees are pissing me off already because they're lazy bastards (and yet they're the best of the applicants). The deposit also wasn't exactly right tonight.
And we just opened this morning.
What does Casey do in this situation? Smoke my pipe, drink some liquor, and listen to my favorite band, Bigger than Dallas. Thank the supreme being for such fabulously enjoyable vices. Now, please excuse me while I drink myself into a short coma.

12.22.03 (9:18 pm) [edit]
There's just something maddening about using a computer program that you understand about 15% of. I made an attempt tonight to do a print layout of album covers in Quark to take the printer tomorrow. The idea was simple enough: six up on a turn and flip, 11x17, offset printed on 65 lb, no bleed.
The execution was excruciating. My Quark mentor for the evening was Ryan, Troubletown Records' Art Director. Unfortunately for me, he's a Mac only guy. In other words, everytime he tried to do something on my PC, he accidentally opened up a menu. So, in between his inept PC handling and my bumbling Quark usage, we pretty much just managed to frustrate ourselves. I'm going to bed.

Had a great night of meetings with the record label tonight. We picked up masters of the new CD from Bigger than Dallas, and I had the cover art I did approved by the other guys. Everything seems to be going so well! We've been in business just a few short weeks, but we're still operating under budget and are putting out a new release next week. How cool is that?
I'm so excited! I just sat down with a loaf of bananna bread and some egg nog, and I'm going to listen to Christmas carols and daydream about the new release. And yes, friends, one day I will publish about Optitheism. I promise. Just not when I'm so tired....*snore*

It's a cold rainy night here in Tennessee. My dog is sleeping quietly at my feet, and there's a Guinness Extra Stout on my desk. Outside it's the sort of annoyingly soft, constant rain that really makes you appreciate shelter. It's a soaking rain. The kind of rain that makes everything so utterly wet that it takes days to dry out even if sunny weather appears.
Perfect weather for...graphic design. I sit here now listening to old Memphis blues songs and designing the album graphics for Bigger than Dallas's new release, "Bigger than Dallas Takes It All Off". Unfortunately, rheumatoid arthritis has claimed my hands at the early age of 21, and my right index finger is killing me from the wet weather and all the precise mouse movements I'm having to make.
Sure, I could go to bed now and call it a day, but the work would still be here tomorrow. Might as well rub some pain cream on my hands and keep working. Besides, supposedly pain makes a person create their best art. Something about the purity of emotional expression or something. Perhaps I'll hit my toe with a hammer and I'll suddenly come up with the greatest album cover since Abbey Road.
Or I could just hush and keep working, and listen to the blues and the rain pattering on the windows.

So tired...
12.15.03 (10:46 pm) [edit]
No, I haven't forgotten about my blog, but this week is/has been crazy. It's obvious that the holidays are in full swing. Everybody is out getting in my way whenever possible. I think they call it shopping, but I call it getting in my damn way.
Expect a post very soon titled "Where are my navy shoes?". It will be the aforementioned description of Optitheism, as well as a quick look at the nature of religion and faith. Until then, sleep tight!

Shopping sucks! I had to go to Wal-Mart tonight to try to find presents for some co-workers before the office Christmas party tomorrow. Needless to say, the crowds were ridiculous and I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. Now, instead of blogging about Optitheism like I had planned, I'm tired and just want to go to bed.
Not like anybody was really hopping up and down to hear about it, though...

I really want to get this cool hat I saw on the Guiness website, but everything on there is SO expensive! I guess they have to pay a lot of import taxes when shipping the stuff to America, and we're only the world's 4th largest Guiness consuming nation (rather than like first or second), so they're not going to make any huge exception for us. Too bad, that hat was frickin' sweet.
I intend to wax philosophical on religion in the next couple of days, so stay tuned for an explanation and analysis of Optitheism. For now, I've got record label business that I need to attend to. Good night.

I'm a bastard in need of help.
12.09.03 (4:25 pm) [edit]
Sorry for my lack of blogging yesterday, but the cable company "accidentally" disconnected my cable because they got me mixed up with the previous resident of my new home and thought I had hundreds in unpaid bills.
Geez.
Can anyone tell me how I go about adding HTML code to the sidebar of my blog (such as to add the Unkymoods thing)? I need serious help!

Well, this has been one of those weeks that changes a person's life forever.
Last week and for the sixth months prior (as you may know if you have read my Bio), I was a Solutions Specialist for Maytag Customer Service. Customers and servicers would call in to me with problems and I would try help them.
I lived in a nice 3-bedroom, 2 1/2 bath brick house on 5 acres on the south side of town. Then my landlord (a friend of mine) got in a dispute with her family and is selling all the land she owned. That included my house. I didn't have the money to buy it, so this last Monday I started moving across town to a duplex (my first living experience since college where I've had neighbors). The duplex is nice, but is a 2-bedroom single bath, and it has been an adventure fitting all my stuff in without it looking cluttered.
...Then, while in the process of moving, I got [i]the email[/i]. "How would you like to be the Director of Public Relations for Troubletown Records?" Hmmm....So, here I am, five days and several meetings later, sitting as one of the four founding members of a new label, deep in business with some very experienced and successful people. It's a great feeling. I knew who some of these guys were years before I met them.
...Then, Wednesday (when I made that last blog entry), I had lunch with the owners of a new BBQ restaurant in town. I went to the meeting under the impression that I was consulting on their computer system operations and setting up their mess sheets/ordering lists. Turns out they offered me the job of General Manager for the restaurant. I accepted...
So now I have a new job starting 12/15. I'm wrapping up here at Maytag (next Saturday is my last day). And today I haven't been worth crap at work. Once you decide to leave, you really don't care what you do. It really doesn't matter. I've been walking around the building, shaking hands and taking pictures.
Life is so strange...and it just did a 180 this week.

Survey says......
12.03.03 (8:34 am) [edit]
Well, I'm in the process of moving across town. This moving process has taken all week. Today is my day off from Maytag, but I'm supervising the data entry of the "Local Government Study Committee Citizen Survey". My phone is ringing off the hook, everyone is asking me questions, and I have 8 meetings to attend today. It's frickin' crazy.
But the cable guy is supposed to be out to my new house to transfer my modem today, so I should be blogging from home again before long. Look for more entries soon, people!
